Tourism is about connection, discovery and freedom. But for millions of people with disabilities or reduced mobility, traveling still means facing barriers: lack of information, unsuitable facilities and, very often, a simple “no” without any assessment. At TRT Brotas we believe in a simple idea: if it isn't for everyone, it isn't tourism.
What accessible tourism is
Accessible tourism is tourism in which people with disabilities, older adults, pregnant women and anyone with reduced mobility can take part with autonomy, safety and dignity. It is not only about ramps and adapted restrooms: it involves clear information, trained staff and a willingness to find solutions.
In Brazil, the Brazilian Inclusion Law (Law No. 13,146/2015) guarantees people with disabilities the right to tourism and leisure on an equal basis with others. Worldwide, ISO 21902 deals precisely with accessible tourism for all, with requirements and recommendations for the whole tourism chain.

Adventure tourism can be accessible too
Many people believe adventure and accessibility don't go together. That's not true. What makes an adventure activity possible for more people is safety management: knowing the risks, assessing each participant and defining the necessary adaptations.
That is what ABNT NBR ISO 21101 provides for: the Safety Management System standard for adventure tourism adopted by TRT Brotas. On this basis, we stopped answering “you can't” and started asking “how can we do this safely?”.
How it works at TRT Brotas
On the ATV tour, each case is assessed by our coordinators and lead guides. Today, in short:
- Can take part normally: people with hearing impairment and older adults, following the general tour rules.
- With adapted equipment or a detailed assessment by the guides: people with paraplegia, visual impairment or intellectual disability.
- At the moment, cannot take part safely: people with quadriplegia and pregnant women.
- Other disabilities or reduced mobility: case-by-case assessment by our team.
The general rules apply to everyone: rider aged 18 or over with a category B driver's license, passenger from 7 years old, maximum of 2 people per ATV and maximum weight of 250 kg. See the full table on our page Accessibility.
Tips for planning an accessible trip to Brotas
- Talk to the companies before booking. Tell them who will take part and what each person needs. The more information, the better the assessment.
- Ask about the facilities. Parking, changing rooms, restrooms and walking stretches can make a difference to your day.
- Bring what you already use. Medication, orthoses and personal equipment help keep you comfortable and independent.
- Allow plenty of time. That way there is time for the briefing, adjustments and adapting without rushing.
- Plan your itinerary with people who know the town. We help combine the ATV tour with other activities in Brotas: see Things to do in Brotas.
Accessibility on the website too
Accessibility starts before the trip, when you look for information. That is why the TRT Brotas website offers Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) translation via VLibras, an accessibility toolbar with font size and contrast settings, keyboard navigation and an English version. Found a barrier? Tell us on WhatsApp (14) 99747-8797 or by email at trtbrotas@gmail.com.
Real tourism welcomes everyone. If you have any questions about whether someone in your group can take part, talk to us before booking. Together we'll find the best way to enjoy this adventure.
